Convair CV-240 with R-2800-CA18 Engines

Landing

*********************************************************

The two Pratt & Whitney R-2800-CA18 Double Wasp engines are carburetted and highly supercharged. They are optimised for use from high altitude runways. 2400hp is available for TOGA below 7600 QNH for a maximum of two minutes using water/methanol injection (ADI) for emergency cooling. The constant speed propellers can be feathered and have reverse pitch.

AUTOMIXTURE - SET AUTOMIXTURE ON in realism screen.

TAKE OFF ABOVE 7600 QNH - all take offs and go arounds above 7600 QNH must be performed with the engine derated to METO RPM (2600). Failure to retard RPM to 2600 may reduce thrust. For every 200 feet above 7600 QNH reduce payload by 200 pounds, (one passengers plus bags).

DRY TAKE OFF using no more than MAP = 53.5 to prolong engine life is permitted at any weight and any altitude.

CARB HEAT - When MAP < 29 and OAT < +5C  apply CARB HEAT for 30 seconds every few minutes to clear carb ice. Use of CARB HEAT CAUSES significant LOSS OF POWER.

FUEL LOAD - Default and maximum fuel load is 9,300lbs of 130 Octane AVGAS. PPH values below are for planning purposes using the 2008 Propliner Tutorial. A CalClassic Notepad (CCN) gauge is provided and can be used instead. Adjust fuel and payload according to trip length using the fuel and payload menu within FS9.

OPERATIONAL CEILING (OC) - The original purchasers of the CV240 cruised using design cruise power for a while but they and all second users soon adopted reduced cruise power to increase safety margins. A CCN gauge is provided. Use it to determine current OC more accurately than the VSII criteria cited below and pitch criteria cited within the 2008 Propliner Tutorial. A CCN gauge replicates calculations provided by your crew to inform your captaincy decisions.

WARNING - CRITICALLY WEAK STRUCTURE - This aircraft may suffer structural failure during cruise in cold air.

WARNING - NO MACHMETER - NO BARBER POLE - OBSERVE ALL IAS RESTRICTIONS WITH CARE

Note: Calclassic panels load with a barber pole to assist inexperienced users. Click on ASI to remove this cheat mode.
